Sister Rosemary Laboon Obituary

Sister Rosemary Laboon (Sr. M. Anne), a Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 76 years, died at the Convent of Mercy in Oakland on January 7, 2019. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa. she was 92 years old. Daughter of John Francis and Catherine (Reilly) Laboon, Sister Rosemary entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Bernard Parish, Mount Lebanon, in 1943 and made final vows in 1949. Sister Rosemary earned a bachelor’s degree from Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University).  She taught for 40 years at various Catholic schools including St. Colman, Turtle Creek, Holy Family, Latrobe, St. Maurice, Forest Hills, St. Paul Cathedral, Our Lady of Fatima, Hopewell Twp. St. Regis School and St. Thomas the Apostle in South Miami, Fla.  In 1987, she became co-manager of Centurion Commons Condominium. Sister Rosemary was a parish social minister for St. Maurice Parish and worked in many departments at Mercy Hospital.  Upon retirement, she continued to volunteer in various ministries at Mercy Hospital and at the Motherhouse in Oakland. “She was selfless and caring,” her sister Joan remarked. Whatever was needed, Rosemary rose to the occasion. Even if it was a simple prayer, she was always willing.”Preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Katheryn Laboon, Claire Laboon Maloy, Mary Jane Laboon Allen, Sister M. de Lellis Laboon, RSM and brothers, Thomas, Father John, and Father Joseph Laboon, Sister Rosemary is survived by a sister, Sister Joan Laboon, RSM.  Friends will be received Wednesday, January 9 from 4-7 p.m. and Thursday, January 10 from 9-11 am at the Convent of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Avenue. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, January 10 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Convent of Mercy, followed by interment in St. Xavier Cemetery, Latrobe. Arrangements entrusted to the EDWARD P. KANAI FUNERAL HOME, 500 Greenfield Avenue.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213 or the Carlow University Scholarship Fund.
