Betty J. Cribbs, a lifelong resident with the Sisters of Mercy, died at the Convent of Mercy on October 25, 2021. Born in Chestnut Ridge, Pa., she was 88 years old. As a young person, Betty worked in housekeeping at St. Xavier Academy in Latrobe, Pa., and moved to the Convent of Mercy in Pittsburgh in 1972 after St. Xavier’s was destroyed by fire. A hard worker, Betty served in the kitchen, laundry, dining room and housekeeping until she retired in 2014.
Betty was beloved by the Sisters. Generous and mannerly, Betty took her work seriously. She was humorous in her own way, and had special names for Sisters whose names she found difficult to pronounce. She loved knowing what was going on and had a wonderful way of asking people what they knew so she could have the latest information.
The youngest of nine children, Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Anna Anthony and George Cribbs, as well as brothers and sisters. A private funeral will be followed by interment at St. Xavier’s Cemetery in Latrobe, Pa. Arrangements entrusted to the EDWARD P. KANAI FUNERAL HOME, 500 Greenfield Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213 or Bethlehem Haven, 905 Watson Street, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15219.
