Hannah Gallagher Obituary

Hannah Gallagher, 96, formerly of the Greenfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at the Gull Creek Senior Living Community in Berlin, MD.

Hannah was born on March 28,1928 in the village of Lixnaw, County Kerry, Ireland. She was the third of ten children born to John and Catherine Horgan, and lived and worked on her parents’ farm until she was 16 years old. At that age, she moved and worked in various different parts of Ireland, eventually moving to England at the age of 18 where she worked on Billionaires Row in London as a housemaid. .

In 1953, she immigrated to the United States. She met the love of her life, a lad from County Mayo, Ireland, James, at a Pittsburgh Irish social dance and were married on October 9, 1954 at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Oakland. Hannah was predeceased by her husband in 2017. She was the proud mother of Jack (Janet) of Millsboro, DE, Patrick James, deceased, and Sheila Donovan (Bill) of Millsboro, DE. Hannah was a cherished “Grammie” of 5 grandchildren, (Christine, Caitlyn, Casey, Reilly, and Danny), as well as “Great-Grammie” of 7 great-grandchildren, (Hudson, Maisy, Everly, Adaline, Aubrey, Cameron, and Will).

Hannah was very proud of her Irish heritage and instilled in her children her strong faith of God and a hard work ethic. While her husband was driving a tractor-trailer over the road for over 30 years, Hannah stayed at home and raised her three children with tough love and admiration. Having never driven an automobile, she walked many miles in her life, five times per week to the Giant Eagle for groceries and several times a week to Holy Mass at St. Rosalia. Whether her kids were playing baseball at Hammer Field or basketball at Greenfield School, Hannah would walk the hills to be there in support. She relaxed listening to Irish music, especially the Irish Tenors. In her later years, she prayed the rosary every morning after a hot cup of tea.

Visitation with family and friends will be held on Thursday, July 25 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Kanai’s Funeral Home, 500 Greenfield Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the St. Rosalia Worship Site of St. Paul’s Cathedral Parish, 411 Greenfield Ave, Pittsburgh, at 10:00am on Friday, July 26.
