Harry Arthur Knipp, in his 90th year, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 21, 2024. Born on May 6, 1934, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the beloved son of the late Ethel and Arthur Knipp, and the cherished husband of 65 years to Mary Boyle Knipp.
Harry was a devoted father to Michael (Leann), Kathleen Lampenfeld (David), and Patrick (Renee), and a proud grandfather to Liam Lampenfeld, Troy Lampenfeld, Sean Michael Knipp, Connor Knipp, and Rory Knipp. He was also a loving brother-in-law to James Boyle (deceased) Dorothy Ryan (deceased) Thomas Boyle (Emily) and will be deeply missed by his many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Harry attended Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School ('52) as did his two sons and 5 grandsons.
Harry enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 82nd Airborne during the Korean War. His dedication to service remained a hallmark of his life, with a career as a Pittsburgh firefighter that spanned 41 years.
Rising through the ranks from Lieutenant to Captain, Harry spent the final decade of his career as the head of the City of Pittsburgh Arson Squad. He was particularly known for his bravery, notably being the first firefighter to jump from the third floor of the newly opened fire training academy.
Harry and Mary raised their family in Squirrel Hill, where they were active members of St. Philomena's Church, forging lasting friendships. For 50 years, they enjoyed a summer camp in Erie and Conneaut Lake, Pennsylvania, surrounded by friends who became family. After retiring, Harry and Mary became snowbirds, spending their winters in Fort Myers, Florida, and making even more dear friends.
A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Harry will be remembered for his unwavering love, his courage, and his deep commitment to his family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, bravery, and service, and he will be forever cherished by all those who knew and loved him.
Friends will be received on Monday from 2-8 p.m. in the Edward P. Kanai Funeral Home 500 Greenfield Ave. 15207. Funeral Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. in the Funeral Home.
