Mary Zak Obituary

Mary Scariot Zak, 99, of Lexington, NC, formerly of Greenfield, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, April 28, 2022.

She was born in Smith Township, Pennsylvania, on December 27, 1922, to Antonia Scariot (nee Scopel) and Angelo Scariot, who were from Seren, Italy. Mary attended Burgettstown High School, moving to Pittsburgh at 17. She married Stephen Zak on February 8, 1942, and they were married for 63 years.

During World War II, Mary worked for the railroad, including serving as a crane operator. She was the first woman in her neighborhood to learn to drive and bought her own car. Over the years, Mary spent countless hours volunteering at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, especially for the pirohi sales. She enjoyed traveling to the beach with her family almost every summer for many years. Mary was an excellent cook and loved to have family get-togethers. She will be remembered for the love and pride she had for her family.

Mary was predeceased by her parents; her husband Stephen Zak; her son Stephen Robert Zak; and her Seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by her children Sandy (John) Stibrik of Hillsdale, PA; Judy (Kevin) Kolesar of Lexington, NC; Ted (Annie) Zak of Pittsburgh; her daughter-in-law Mary Catherine Zak; 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins also survive.

Friends and family will be received from 4 until 8 p.m. on Monday, May 9th in the Edward P. Kanai Funeral Home, 500 Greenfield Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15207. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 10th at 10 a.m. at St. Rosalia’s Roman Catholic Church, 411 Greenfield Avenue. Burial will be private.
