Tomasovich, Paul, 89 of Greenfield. The softball team in heaven got their first-round draft pick on Sunday, March 5, 2023. Paul “Big Paul, “Superman”, “King Kong” Tomasovich, the man, the myth, the legend, left this earth at the age of 89 surrounded by his family. Who in Pittsburgh sports circles has never heard about Paul hitting a softball onto Greenfield Avenue from Magee Field, or hitting the lights at Moore Park? Who doesn’t know someone who played football, basketball, or a softball game that Paul officiated? Married 63 years to Mary Jane (Palmer), they are the parents of 7 daughters: Cathy (Rich) Fitzgerald, Judy (Jim) Mermigas, Paula (Bill) Pugh, Janet (RB) Frost, Janie (Doug) Olson, Julie (Michael) Brennan, and Carol (Josh) Stead. Paul was a very proud Pap of 28 grandchildren: Jocelyn, Erin, Caroline, Tanner (Maddy Saxon), Madeline, Louisa, Mara, and Jackson Fitzgerald. Eleni (Bennet) Salvatore, Melina, Alexa, and Niko Mermigas. Billy (Kate), Elizabeth (Trent) Childress, Micah, and Anthony Pugh. Rick, Rachel (Zack), Joe, and Jackie Frost. Lauren, Christen, and Leah Olson. Lindy, Rory, and Kate Brennan, and Lukas Stead. Paul was inducted into the Slo-Pitch Hall of Fame in 1992 and was widely thought of as one of the greatest players of all time. He enjoyed spending time with his late friend, Baldy Regan, spent many years working the stats table at the Steelers games, had lots of good times with his football referee crews, and recently looked forward to seeing the folks at the Greenfield Center for lunch and camaraderie. If you ever met Paul, you know he enjoyed telling a story, and probably shared a funny and possibly off-color joke on occasion. He loved his wife’s delicious cooking, and delighted in watching his grandchildren’s sports activities. Thanks to the staff at the Oakland VA for their care in Paul’s final days, who said they had never seen a larger group for a final Honor Escort procession. May he rest in peace. Visitation will be on Wednesday March 8, 2PM – 7PM at The Edward P. Kanai Funeral Home 500 Greenfield Ave. 15207 with a Blessing Service at the funeral home at 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers donations in Paul’s honor may be made to their charity of choice.
