Sister Marie Immaculée Dana, RSM (Beryl Dana), a Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 69 years, died at the Convent of Mercy Motherhouse on March 23, 2023. Born in Albany, N.Y., she was 91 years old. Daughter of Peter T. and Frances (Karger) Dana, Sister Marie Immaculée entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1953 and made final vows in 1959.
Sister Marie Immaculée earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rosemont College in Rosemont, Pa. On a Fulbright Scholarship, she studied French at L’Université de Bourgogne, in Dijon, France, and completed her Ph.D. in French at Radcliffe-Harvard. In the 1960s, Sister Marie began teaching French at Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University). Her long career in higher education included serving as associate professor of French where she influenced many of her students to expand their horizons. As chair of the department of education, and vice president for academic affairs, she was very influential in developing the solid curriculum of the education department. Retiring in 2004, Sister Marie was an academic advisor and retention coordinator in the adult degree center and served as vice president of the Pittsburgh Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy from 2004-2008. She ministered as a local leader of the Pittsburgh Community of the Sisters of Mercy and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, Sisters Place, and McAuley Ministries Foundation.
On the lighter side, Sister Marie Immaculée was always up for a good time like watching Steelers football, delighting in Spring picnics, doing yard work, or having a good steak dinner.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Warren. A private funeral liturgy for Sister Marie Immaculée will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 28 at 11 a.m. Interment follows at in St. Xavier Cemetery, Latrobe. Arrangements entrusted to the EDWARD P.
