Sister Peg (Malachy) O’Neill, RSM (Margaret Price O’Neill), 90, a Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 72 years, died at the Convent of Mercy infirmary on July 20, 2022. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was the daughter of Charles and Sara O’Neill. Sister Peg entered the Sisters of Mercy from Cathedral High School and St. Philomena Parish in 1950 and made final vows in 1956.
Sister Peg earned a B.A. degree from Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University) and an M.A. from the University of Notre Dame. She taught in various area Catholic schools including St. Elizabeth, Epiphany, St. Colman, St. Paul Orphanage, Carlow Campus School, St. Cyril of Alexandria, St. Maurice, and St. Peter’s High School in McKeesport. When that school closed, Peg founded the Intersection in 1972 to provide direct services to people in the McKeesport area. She served as director until her death.
Intersection celebrates 50 years of service this year. It was the center of her life, and making everyone welcome was her primary goal. In her own words: “I was so impressed by the way Jesus helped the ‘poor’ that I started a place in the midst of poor people and spent the rest of my working years there.” Love of the poor defined her work and her life. She extended warm hospitality to everyone and treated people with dignity. Proud of her Irish Mercy heritage, Peg entertained with her quick Irish wit and engaging sense of humor.
Sister Peg was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Jane Quinn, Charles and Edward O’Neill. She is survived by beloved nieces, nephews, Mercy Sisters, Mercy Associates and close friends from the Intersection community.
A funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 27 starting at 11:00 a.m. and livestreamed at https://vimeo.com/event/2299784 . Interment will follow at St. Xavier Cemetery, Latrobe. Arrangements entrusted to the EDWARD P. KANAI FUNERAL HOME, 500 Greenfield Avenue.
