Sister Susan Fitzpatrick, RSM (Susan Ludwig) a Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 44 years, died at the Convent of Mercy on September 24, 2022. Born in Milwaukee, WI, she was 80 years old. Daughter of Carl and Joyce (Williams) Ludwig, she entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Joan of Arc Parish in Boca Raton, Fla. in 1978 and made final vows in 1986.
Sister Susan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duquesne University and a Masters in Social Work from Barry University, Miami, Fla. She worked in pastoral ministry to the sick and elderly at St. Joan of Arc Parish in Boca Raton and ministered in adoption and family counseling in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale areas. After moving to Pittsburgh in 1990, Sister Susan served in social work at Mercy Hospital and, most recently, at Pittsburgh Mercy where she provided compassionate service to individuals with addiction. A few years ago, she wrote that she liked to watch people learn to believe in themselves – “to discover the treasure inside of them, to hear their own call.” Sister Susan was also committed to people served by Shepherd’s Heart, a transitional housing service for homeless veterans.
Preceded in death by her parents, Sister Susan is survived by cousins Jean Hamil of Cape Coral, Fla. and Kay Johnston of Stone Lake, WI. A private funeral liturgy was followed by interment in St. Xavier’s Cemetery, Latrobe, Pa. Arrangements entrusted to the EDWARD P. KANAI FUNERAL HOME, 500 Greenfield Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213 or the Carlow University Scholarship Program.
